Description

About this resource

A Historian's Companion to Isaiah is a historical companion to Isaiah 1-23. It is not a verse-by-verse commentary on the biblical text. Instead, it describes the world Isaiah lived in: the kingdoms, rulers, wars, imperial pressures, social conditions, archaeology, inscriptions, and wider international events that help the reader understand what was happening around Judah and Jerusalem.

Isaiah 1:1 places the prophet in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. This companion sets that ministry in the eighth-century world of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, the northern kingdom of Israel, Aram-Damascus, Egypt, Moab, Babylon, Tyre, Sidon, Cush, and the wider Mediterranean horizon.

The chapters follow Isaiah 1-23 and explain the historical setting behind each chapter: Judah in the eighth century, the age of wealth and arms, ancient government, war and demography, tribute and extraction, the Syro-Ephraimite crisis, Assyrian campaigning, the fall of Samaria, Babylon before its great moment, Moab in crisis, Egypt in fragmentation, Sargon's campaign against Ashdod, Jerusalem's administration, and the maritime world of Tyre and Sidon.

This volume is designed for lay readers, Bible students, pastors, and teachers who want historical clarity without losing the biblical text. It pairs naturally with Isaiah: Commentary on Isaiah 1-12 by Randy White, giving historical background for the prophetic material covered in the commentary.
